Three more Isle of Man residents have been selected to represent the Global Poverty Project (GPP) as Ambassadors, to continue the groundbreaking initiative, which has been bringing awareness about the reality of extreme poverty to the island, since Kristina Crawford’s selection as Ambassador in January 2012. Joining Kristina on this project are Helen Ashcroft of Port St Mary, Rosemary Clarke of Peel and Vicki Rowberry of Douglas, who is also currently studying at the University of Winchester.
In March 2013, Kristina Crawford was recognised for her outstanding contribution to Global Poverty Project’s campaigns with the ‘Ambassador of the Year’ award. Having launched the Island specific Point 1 campaign calling on the Isle of Man Government to continue to work towards the commitment to give 0.7% in Gross National Income in international aid by 2015, and having advocated for the Island’s recent commitment of funding toward the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, Kristina inspired the new Ambassadors to apply.
“It is a real honour to hold the title of Global Poverty Ambassador as it means that we are part of an international network of leaders working for change, starting with their own communities and impacting the lives of others across the globe.” acknowledged Kristina.
“I am so excited to have been given the opportunity to be involved in such an groundbreaking movement... and to have Kristina as such an inspirational role model and mentor has been priceless" Vicki said.
The new ambassadors have already begun their involvement in island-wide campaigns, with the great success of the Live Below the Line campaign, in which participants live on ?1 per day for food and drink for 5 days to raise awareness and funds to help end extreme poverty. This year saw a greater number of participants on the Island a current total of over ?1,500 raised to help end extreme poverty.
The ambassador team will also all be delivering the eye-opening 1.4 Billion Reasons presentation to various groups all over the Island. The first public presentation is taking place on Sat 25th May 5pm at Northern Lights Community Centre in Ramsey.
