On Friday 24th May 2013 between 1:15pm and 3pm, Victoria Road School are hosting an event for the children whereby representatives from different Emergency Services will be bringing the various vehicles and operatives to the school as a surprise for the children. PC Lou Kennaugh of the Southern Neighbourhood Policing Team said, “Picture this: You go into your class and start the day as normal but wonder why the windows overlooking the play ground are covered up. Then, in the afternoon you are told to follow the teacher outside and when you get there your playground is transformed into a full blown Emergency Services display.”
In keeping with the theme, ’People that help you’ which is incorporated into the learning at all of the island’s Primary schools, members of the Police, Fire, Ambulance and RNLI will be on hand to show the children what the Emergency Services can do. Although the children are unaware of the reasons behind it, they have the option of coming to school that day dressed in their favourite Emergency Service uniform and are paying 50 pence for which the proceeds will be split between St John’s Ambulance and the RNLI.
Sergeant Paul Kemp said, “This initially started out as our local officers arranging visits from our various Police departments to the schools and nurseries as, although the local officers are routinely in and out of the schools, we try to bring other departments in to assist in breaking down barriers. From this, PC Lou Kennaugh tried to find a way that would get the message to the children about all of the services in a joined up way and with the help of Mrs Savin at Victoria Road School, this is the result. The amazing thing about this event is that the other services are being represented by their volunteer and retained members who have taken the afternoon off from their day jobs specially and between us all we are already thinking about how to improve and extend to other schools for next year” .
