Sulby Hydro station achieved an all-time record of 4.9GWh of power generated from Sulby Reservoir at the year end.
The original record was achieved in 1994 at 4.5GWh and it was hoped to break the 5GWh goal which represents 1.25% of the Islands needs being provided by Green Energy from this small station tucked away in the Tholt-y-Will quarry.
The station has now been serving the Island for some 32 years with the two turbines originally commissioned in 1981 and 1983 by the IoM Electricity Board which in 1984 became the MEA along with the Douglas Corporation Electricity Department. The turbines are fed using the top four metres of the Sulby dam and some water is also taken from the Water Authority’s Block Eary reservoir, which is in the next valley and connected by two pipelines to the turbine building.
Chief Executive Phil King said, “We have combined the latest technology with older plant which means we can now remotely control the draw from the dam via a specially designed Phone App, to ensure we get as much power as possible from this green resource when it is available, thus providing access to this resource 24/7. The plant continues to serve us extremely well and after a major overhaul in 2009, I am sure it will continue to do so for years to come.”
