Vintage car enthusiasts enjoy ‘rally’ good time at Tynwald

by isleofman.com 23rd May 2013

Members of the Preston and District Vintage Car Club met Members of the Legislative Council when they toured the Tynwald chambers during their visit to the Isle of Man.

Geoff Corkish MLC and Alex Downie MLC arranged the tour during which the visitors were keen to explore the Island’s historical links with their region and the origins of the TT.

Mr Downie said: ‘The group were very impressed with their time in the Isle of Man. During the tour of the chambers discussions about Lancashire’s connections to the Island prompted a good number of questions about the Earls of Derby and the Stanley family. The visitors were also interested to learn more about Lord Raglan’s involvement in setting up the Gordon Bennett motorcar trials that led to the first Tourist Trophy races.

‘The club’s chairman, David Lawson, told us his group had thoroughly enjoyed their time here, made all the more agreeable thanks to a few days of good weather and to the hospitality and warm welcome they received. We were especially pleased to learn that the tour of Tynwald had proved to be one of the highlights of their visit to the Island.’
