Isle of Man Archery Report - 26th May

by isleofman.com 28th May 2013

Weather conditions were perfect for Sunday’s shoot with hats and sunscreen the order of the day. Several club members were competing off island but those who turned up were on good form. The round of the day was a Metric I, 3 dozen arrows shot at each of four distances: 70, 60, 50 and 30m respectively.

The Compound division saw a four way tie between Simon Musgrove, Billy Lightfoot, Colin Moore and Pete Mumford. Unfortunately Simon Musgrove was forced to retire due to equipment failure. Of the others, Billy Lightfoot made the slowest start but began to find his form at the 60m distance. Pete Mumford registered an uncharacteristic miss at the end of the first dozen arrows at the 50m target. Lightfoot gained five points on Mumford and going into the final distance had eased into second place. Dropping only 7 points with his next dozen arrows it looked as if Lightfoot would take the lead when a lapse in concentration saw him put an arrow into Mumford’s target. The miss handed the victory to Mumford by the slimmest of margins, indeed only 9 points separated the three archers. All three men posted personal best scores for the round.

Of the Recurve archers only Mat Smith and newcomer Danny Cowin were able to put in a full day’s shoot. Tony Hartley shot the longer distances during the morning to post a personal best score for the Long Metric I. Danny Cowin shot a Metric II round which comprised 3 dozen arrows at each of four distances 60, 50, 40 and 30m. Only Mat Smith completed the round of the day.
In the afternoon the ranks of the Recurve archers were increased by the arrival of Adam Wright and the Harris family. They all elected to shoot the Short Metric round of 3 dozen arrows at each of the 50 and 30m targets. Ian Harris was taking part in his first outdoor competition. Charlotte Harris was shooting the round for the first time, while Barbara Harris and Adam Wright were looking to beat their previous best scores for the round.

Adam, who has shaved points off his handicap with every round he has shot in the outdoor season, continued his run of form by adding 79 points to his pb. Ian Harris struggled a little with the 50m distance but began to find form and consistency on the 30m target. Charlotte Harris, shooting with a fractured hip, was a little off form at the longer distance but out shot Dad Ian at the shorter one. Barbara Harris was not happy with her performance but still managed to add 10 points to her pb.

Results Metric 1 – Compound: 1. Pete Mumford 143 1262 40 12pb, 2. Billy Lightfoot 143 1258 42 11pb, 3. Colin Moore 144 1253 36 12pb, Recurve: Mat Smith 141 953 12 8pb.
