Simcocks has handed its staff a ?10 note and asked them to put it to work and raise money for the Isle of Man Anti-Cancer Association.
Each year staff at the Douglas-based law practice choose a different Isle of Man-based charity to adopt and raise money for through a range of different events including dress down days, cake bakes and running a stall at Nobles Park car boot sale.
This year the directors of Simcocks were inspired by North Yorkshire Vicar Paul Peverell who decided to make an extraordinary gesture from the pulpit – he handed everyone in his congregation a tenner and in return they had to use their windfall imaginatively for the greater good of the community.
Chief executive Phil Games said: “Staff overwhelming voted to support the IOM Anti-Cancer Association and when I read about how the congregation had pulled together I thought it was inspirational. We have some very creative and entrepreneurial members of staff who are having a great deal of fun coming up with some really innovative fundraising ideas.”
One member of staff arranged a cake bake, another is charging friends to come to his house for a fabulous dinner, another has made a range of aromatherapy products to sell to neighbours, one is selling jewellery, another has been selling savoury and sweet treats to friends and family while another has acquired some chickens and is selling the eggs.
In particular Simcocks wants to support the Association’s Staywell Clinic which provides cervical screening for women out of normal working hours at Nobles Hospital and costs around ?15,000 a year to run.
Malcolm Clague, President of the IOM Anti-Cancer Association said: “The Isle of Man Anti-Cancer Association greatly appreciates the fund-raising efforts of the staff at Simcocks and in particular asking staff to put a ?10 note to work. These are challenging times for those working in cancer care, having to stretch their resources to achieve as much from it as possible. This often calls for new or innovative approaches. The staff at Simcocks are living out the same experience in having to make the most of their ?10 for the benefit of Island residents.”
