The new facilities at South Barrule Forest Park are now firmly established, with several new private ventures offering exciting activities for the public, plus jobs and wages for the people involved in the businesses.
Minister Gawne commented “At a time when Government is short of money, I am delighted that we have been able to work in partnership with private businesses to provide new activities for the public, using government facilities and private capital. It would have been very easy for us to send out the message that reduced budget means a reduced service but instead we have worked with partners to expand the services we can offer using alternative service delivery models and at a reduced cost to the taxpayer.”
“We now have Ape Mann providing both high wire fun and pedal Go-Karts; Lazer Mayhem providing skirmishes in the woods; and Segway providing the opportunity to ride effortlessly around the forest park, admiring the fantastic views. Together, these businesses are expected to provide around 10 full and part-time jobs. This is as a direct result of the commitment of the individual entrepreneurs coupled with the support of the Department in providing them the opportunity.”
The Department also undertakes a wide range of other recreational development activity in partnership with volunteers from a wide range of organisations, such as the creation of mountain bike trails with assistance from local Clubs.
Minister Gawne concluded “This type of initiative is a win for all parties, as the public get more activities to enjoy, the businessmen are making money and the Department is achieving more amenity provision for the estate. We are very keen to start more of these types of activities and are currently in discussions with several other potential partners. Importantly, we would love to hear from anybody else who has the ideas, skills and ability to work with us.”
