Discover more about John Miller Nicholson’s photography and camera technique as part of his artistic works and vision, with an illustrated talk by Yvonne Cresswell MNH Curator of Social History at the House of Manannan on Saturday 22 June.

John Miller Nicholson was not just a renowned painter but he recorded and captured the world and people around him on an almost daily basis and in a variety of different ways with detailed sketches in his notebook and later with a small hand-held camera.

Unlike many of his contemporaries who would photograph carefully composed scenes, usually in their studios, Nicholson would take his Eureka ‘Detective’ camera out on to Douglas promenade or through Douglas market and capture scenes probably without his subjects even realising they had been photographed.

We are looking forward to understanding more about Nicholson as a photographer, as well as inviting visitors to see the new Isle of Man Photographic Society exhibition at the House of Manannan.’

The talk is in association with the centenary exhibition of works by the Manx artist at the Manx Museum but also the 75 Years of Photography exhibition on display at the House of Manannan, which includes an extensive display of camera and darkroom equipment from the past 100 years.
