The Department of Health has carried out seven serious patient safety reviews because of sudden or unexplained deaths at Noble’s Hospital in the past five years.
The information was given by Health Minister David Anderson in a written reply to a question from South Douglas MHK Kate Beecroft.
In the House of Keys this week, she asked for more details on deaths at the hospital following queries she’d had during an earlier Keys sitting.
Mr Anderson said there were 67 reportable deaths, of which 65 were attributed to natural causes.
Mr Anderson said seven Serious Patient Safety Reviews had been held in five years, but added those investigations didn’t necessarily mean there’d been failures.
These reviews, he said, were carried out to reassure clinical staff and families that appropriate care had been given and to learn lessons for the future.
Fourteen deaths had been referred to the coroner of inquests since 2008.
Mr Anderson said three inquests had been held into the deaths of hospital patients over the past five years – two had resulted in findings of death by natural causes, while one was accidental.
