Department helps to develop local IT skills

by isleofman.com 27th June 2013
The Information Systems Division (ISD) of the Department of Economic Development is seeking two trainee IT (Information Technology) staff as part of its commitment to developing increased IT skills on the Island.

The Minister for Economic Development John Shimmin MHK said:

‘The Isle of Man has a world-class Information and Communication Technology (ICT) infrastructure and related businesses including e-gaming and software development which offer substantial growth opportunities.

‘One of the key challenges the sector faces is in recruiting skilled staff.  Several businesses are struggling to find sufficient skilled IT staff;  this is the case across Europe.  My Department is working with the private sector – particularly the Chamber of Commerce and the Manx ICT Association – and the Department of Education and Children to determine the specific IT needs of local businesses so we can help to meet those needs through education, training and recruitment, which will both help to grow our economy and create great career opportunities for local people.  To that end, last week we commenced a survey of the IT skills needs of local businesses.

In addition, my Department has created two trainee posts as one year limited term appointments, which will provide opportunities for school or college leavers to start their career in IT.  These posts will offer trainees valuable experience across a range of IT disciplines and so help them make that key first step on the career ladder.

I believe the ICT sector offers substantial growth potential for the Isle of Man and my Department will be taking further steps to support this growth.’

Although there will be no guarantee of employment at the end of the one year term, the trainees will have developed the necessary skills and experience to be considered suitable for many IT vacancies that will arise within the public and private sectors.

This is the first time in 3 years that trainee roles have been recruited.  They are being financed from ISD’s existing budget as a result of cost savings made elsewhere in the Division.  In the past the trainees have all found employment within both Government and the private sector.
Political Member with responsibility for ISD Tony Wild MLC said:

‘These roles are a great opportunity for two individuals to gain valuable and marketable experience which will help them find suitable employment within the Isle of Man and helps provide much needed ICT experience into the market place.’

The roles are currently being advertised on the Isle of Man Government’s website at http://www.gov.im/isleofman/employment.xml.
