Archery Report - 30th June 2013

by isleofman.com 2nd July 2013

High winds and the prospect of rain made Sunday’s shoot look doubtful, but calm conditions at the field meant that the round could go ahead for the morning at any rate. Eleven archers turned up in the morning, among them Thomas Bott making a welcome return after an extended break from archery. The round of the day was a Fita/Metric 1 depending on gender, which comprised 3 dozen arrows at each of four distances 70, 60, 50 and 30m.

The weather, which was forecast to worsen by lunchtime, actually improved and the archers enjoyed sunshine for most of the day. The excellent conditions were reflected in the scores with only three archers failing to improve upon their personal best scores.

Billy Lightfoot was forced to abandon the shoot at the half way mark due to arrow damage but the score he posted for the half day added 111 points to his personal best. This left Pete Mumford as the only male compound archer to complete the round, which he did in style adding 35 points to his pb.

Sisters Aalin and Kirsten George were the only lady compound archers on the day. Aalin easily out shot her sister to take the win but Kirsten added 14 points to her pb for the round.

Of the four male recurve archers to compete only Adam Wright and Danny Cowin attempted the round of the day. This was the first time Adam and Danny had shot the Metric I. Both men suffered a number of misses but the more experienced seventeen year old Wright took the win easily.  Tony Hartley could only stay for the morning and his shooting was well below his usual high standard. Thomas Bott contented himself with finding his form on a couple of short distance targets.

Karen Lott and Barbara Harris faced off in the women’s recurve. Lack of practice due illness and the weather showed in Harris’ score, with Lott taking the win by a country mile. Karen added a terrific 36 points to her pb and looks likely to retain her title at the Club Championships in July

Charlotte Harris shot a Metric III by way of practice ahead of the National Championships she will be attending with the George sisters at the weekend. The fourteen year old achieved a pb with a dozen arrows left to shoot and her final score added 107 points to her pb.

The afternoon session saw the arrival of Josh Trafford and Jack Tyrer. They both shot the Short Metric III round suitable for their age groups. Jack added an outstanding 159 points to his pb while Josh Trafford added a jaw dropping 203 points to his personal best.
