The Communications Commission has started looking into issuing licenses for the next generation of mobile phones.

So-called 4G communications are ultrafast broadband such as LTE (Long Term Evolution) or Wimax (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) and have been used for some years in other parts of the world.

A new consultation sets out the process of how companies will be able to apply for licenses in order to offer 4G - they’ll need both a license from the UK to use parts of the radio spectrum, as well as a Manx licence to operate a telco.
