An Isle of Man based crowdfunding website, www.letscrowdit.com has teamed up with Irish filmmaker Philip A McCarthy to help him gain the support of the public as he asks for their help to bring his latest movie, Revenant, to life. Revenant is a thriller set in Dublin and tells the story of three friends who capture a strange event on camera whilst hosting a party, the event causes a major blackout and all but one house is plunged into darkness but why?
Philip has had some notable successes in his career to date having won awards for a play he wrote and directed, “The Dark Room” and after adapting it to a short film it was selected for a screening at the influential Short Film Corner at the Cannes’ film festival in 2007.
The Director/writer Philip said, when launching his crowdfunding campaign, “In an environment where financing from the traditional sources such as the banks is virtually non-existent this new approach to financing artistic and creative projects is really coming into its own”. The campaign aims to raise funding to help with the production costs of the movie.
Nicole Bodell, founder of “lets crowd it” added, “we are delighted to be able to help Philip bring his fundraising campaign to the online community and are pleased that he has chosen to partner with us in his first foray into this method of project funding”. People can use crowdfunding to raise funds for almost any type of project; they must however be of a creative, community or cultural nature. By using “lets crowd it” Philip hopes to reach as wide an audience as possible and by linking the project to Facebook, Twitter and other social media accounts, the word is spread much further through the power of the internet.
Philip said “I live and work in the world of acting and film and understand just how powerful the internet can be as a medium to get your message across to an audience, the rise in the use of social media in recent years means that now almost everyone is connected to each other in some way. I can only see this method of fundraising becoming ever more popular for creative individuals and ever more important for the production of independent films”.
