Following a number of reports and comments over over the future of BA CityFlyer's Isle of Man - London City air service, TravelWatch ISLE OF MAN have been in touch with the relevant parties and can now advise:
• From 1st September, BA CityFlyer are to reduce their important three-times daily service between the Isle of Man and London City airport to one off-peak flight a day, using a larger Embraer twin-jet aircraft.
• The new timetable which runs daily from September until 29th March 2014 is now available to book on
www.ba.com.
• The SAAB turbo-prop aircraft currently used to operate the IOM route - and, presumably, the accompanying slots at London City - are being switched to serve Dusseldorf, an important business centre serving a market many times larger than the Isle of Man.
• BA City Flyer have made it plain on a number of occasions, not least at TravelWatch's last public meeting, that they were concerned at the economic performance of the route. Whilst passenger numbers have been reasonably healthy, increased competition on the London market, with too many seats chasing too few customers, has meant that they have not been able to attract the level of revenue necessary to operate satisfactorily into London City which will always be a high-cost airport.
• BA CityFlyer have stated that the position will be 'reviewed' in the Spring, when the effects of Flybe's withdrawal from the Gatwick route can be better evaluated.
