Traditional sports day at Cronk y Voddy

by isleofman.com 4th July 2013
There may be a new football festival in St Johns taking place on Tynwald day, but a long standing carnival of athletics continues at Cronk y Voddy in the afternoon.
The traditional Sports Day gets underway at 2pm, with the marquee opening at 12.30 to provide nutritional assistance for sportsmen and women of all ages in the shape of tea, coffee, bacon baps and the best cakes in the west.
Howard Caine has the details:
A wide range of sporting action includes sack races, a skipping race and no fewer than six classes for the egg and spoon event.
There's also a bike race for the Brian Quirk memorial shield, whilst the tug of war event always proves to be a big pull and the open class dog racing throughout the afternoon promises some close competition, particularly if all the dogs are facing in the same direction.
It all takes place in the sports field just off the left of the Cronk y Voddy straight and proceeds go to Ronald McDonald House.
