A plaque has been unveiled outside the Renal Unit at Noble’s Hospital in memory of Dr Charles Murray who, along with his team, was instrumental in developing the Island’s first Renal Unit.  Dr Murray, who sadly died in September last year, worked at Noble’s Hospital for 30 years, taking up his post on 1 December 1979, working until his retirement from practicing medicine on 29 August 2009.  The plaque is to serve as a permanent reminder to both staff and patients of a much loved and dedicated Doctor.
 
Clinicians, officers and the Minister for Health, David Anderson MHK, were joined by Dr Murray’s wife Claire and daughters Helen and Claire for the ceremony at which Dr Keith Wilkinson, a close colleague of Dr Murray, spoke warmly about his fond memories or working with him.
 
Dr Wilkinson said: “Charles was always there for his patients.  He was a lovely person, a great family man and an excellent physician.  If anyone dedicated their life to helping the people of the Island, Charles did.  He will be missed by all who knew him.”
 
Neal Mellon, who was Clinical General Manager of the Renal Unit and knew Dr Murray well, unveiled the plaque on behalf of the staff – past and present – at Noble’s Hospital.
 
Neal said: “Charles dedicated 30 years of his life to the relentless improvement of the health and wellbeing of the people of the Isle of Man in the field of general medicine and haemodialysis.  One of Dr Murray’s biggest achievements was working with colleagues to develop the Renal Unit on the Island, greatly improving the quality of life and convenience for those suffering kidney failure.  Charles was a dedicated doctor, who was loved, admired and respected by both patients and colleagues alike.  Charles took many of our consultants under his wing, he was a great team player and staff who worked with him enjoyed working alongside him.
 
“The plaque is just a small token to pay tribute to all that Dr Murray achieved, the difference he made, and how much colleagues miss him.  I’m delighted some of his family were able to join us for this special and poignant occasion.”
