Draw on Gary’s skills to learn the art of cartoons

by isleofman.com 9th July 2013

It’s time for young artists to get animated and learn from a professional about how to draw cartoon characters.

Gary Myers is holding a Draw Cartoons workshop for budding artists, aged seven-11, to share his knowledge and experience of the animation industry.

Father of two Gary, who has worked on television shows including the CITV hit Grizzly Tales for Gruesome Kids, aims to show that freehand drawing of cartoons does not need to be as difficult as you’d imagine.

He explained: ‘If you look at Spongebob Squarepants, for instance, he's based on a square box and you then build up his features from there.’

The workshop is being held in the Family Library, Douglas, on Saturday, July 13.

Gary added: ‘If they have a favourite cartoon character they want to draw, they can bring a picture in and I will teach them to draw that character.

‘Or, if they want to create their own character or they have an idea of a visual creation, I can help show them how to put it together.

‘Everyone will have something they have drawn to take home with them.’

The workshop will be for young artists of all abilities, from the beginner looking to learn the basics to more advanced artists looking to hone their skills.

Librarian in charge at the Family Library Mary Cousins: ‘We are delighted that someone as talented as Gary is putting on a workshop for us as we continue to broaden the range of activities available at the Family Library.’

The workshop, which runs from 1.30pm to 3pm and is open to seven-11 year-olds, is ?5 per person and to book a place either call in at the Family Library or telephone 640650.

The Family Library is in Westmoreland Road, Douglas, next to the playground.
