MHK says Social Care must improve care of young people in homes

North Douglas MHK John Houghton is warning of dire consequences if the Department of Social Care doesn’t look after young people in homes better.
His comments came during a debate on the Chief Constable’s annual report to Tynwald which was received by the court yesterday.
The report says in 2011, 116 children were reported missing from care homes – a figure which more than trebled last year.
Mr Houghton cited the murder of Samantha Barton and George Green ten years ago, warning a similar incident could happen if the department didn’t improve care:
