The ‘obesity pandemic’; can we stomach a solution?

by isleofman.com 11th July 2013
On the 20th September 2011, it was announced at the United Nations General Assembly that non-communicable diseases, such as diabetes; heart disease; and cancer, now account for more deaths in the World's population than contagious, transmittable diseases, such as Malaria and HIV. The Island does not escape this threat, with 2009 figures for the Island suggesting that 25-30% of reception aged children were classified as being overweight or obese.

The Isle of Man United Nations Association will host a presentation on the obesity pandemic by Andrew Newton, Trainee Advocate at Appleby (Isle of Man) LLC, on Thursday 25th July, at Noble's Park Pavilion Community Room from 7:30pm (doors open 7:00pm). The talk will examine the consequences to society of the pandemic; what could be causing such ubiquitous weight gain and associated medical conditions; and what policies governments could adopt to approach the problem.

All are welcome to attend, and light refreshments will be available.
