Over 1000 students, staff and friends of Ballakermeen High School have completed a charity walk of 8.5 miles from the school to Port Soderick and back. The event took place in glorious sunshine and temperatures of 26°, with watering stations en route and a picnic on at Port Soderick.
Despite the heat, nearly all the students finished the walk successfully, and they are now busy collecting money pledged by their sponsors. Within a day, nearly ?6 000 had come in, with a lot more anticipated. This year the students were supported on the walk by members of the catering staff, parents and school governors, while the Police and St John Ambulance provided logistical help.
The walk is held to raise money for charities chosen by the students themselves, and also to honour the memory of those connected with the school whose lives have been cut short. In a gesture of respect, a minute of applause was given by all the participants in a moving ceremony before they set off on the walk home.
The Memorial Walk has taken place every two years since 1991, raising tens of thousands of pounds for local charities. If you have pledged sponsorship or would like to add your support, the school would be grateful to receive your contribution.
