Guy Martin - Southern 100 Solo Champion

by isleofman.com 15th July 2013

Guy Martin took his second Southern 100 Solo Championship in record breaking style, upping the absolute lap record for the 4.25-mile Billown Course to an amazing 114.245mph on the Tyco Suzuki.

In doing so he deprived arch-rival Michael Dunlop riding the Honda TT Legends Superbike of completing a hat-trick of Solo Championships, which would have equalled his Uncle Joey's record set in 1976, 1977 & 1978.

Michael finished second less than half-a-second adrift with Dean Harrison filling the final podium place.

Earlier in the week, Michael took the chequered flag in both Superbike races and was the first rider to better the Superbike lap record in the opening race of the 2013 meeting, round 12 of the Duke Road Race Rankings Championship.

However, it was rising star Dean Harrison who took the limelight during the 58th running of the Southern 100.

The Yorkshireman opened his account finishing second in the first Superbike race, splitting rivals, Michael Dunlop and Guy Martin. Both got the better of him in the second Superbike race as he finished third, although he bettered the lap record increasing it to 113.461mph.

Following on from the Superbike ride he got on his SuperTwin and had an eight lap battle with another rising star Jamie Hamilton who took the chequered flag four-tenths of a second ahead. Again Harrison bettered the lap record at 108.088mph.

In the Supersport race on his 600 Yamaha he took the honours by sevenhundreths of a second from Guy Martin and Michael Dunlop. Martin set a new lap record at 110.306mph, whist winner Harrison set a new race record at 108.129mph.

Dean's second victory of the meeting came in the second SuperTwin race, again setting a new lap record at 103.733mph. He finished off a tremendous week with a third place in the Manx Gas Solo Championship race.
