A charity raffle was held to support the Mayoral Charity Fund 2013/14, at the recent HSBC sponsored Sporting & Dining Club dinner that featured one of crickets greatest ever all-rounders, Sir Garfield Sobers.
Sir Garry spoke to a packed venue, and enthralled the audience with his tales as a leading sportsman. His many achievements include setting the Test record for an individual batsman with a mammoth 365 against Pakistan, captaining six consecutive sixes off a single over from the unfortunate Malcolm Nash and a superb innings of 254 for the Rest of the World against Australia in 1971 that earned the praise of Don Bradman, and much more.
Neil Helmer of HSBC – “It is always a pleasure to entertain our guests and hear the high calibre speakers that the Sporting & Dining Club manage to secure, and it is as pleasing that we are able to support local charities at the same time”
HSBC nominated The Mayoral Charity Fund for 2013/14 to benefit from the charity raffle, and ?855 was raised on the evening. The Mayoral Fund itself is supporting four charities, namely Tabitha’s Trust, Manx Workshop for the Disabled, Victim Support and Junior Achievement Isle of Man. Her Worship The Mayor Carol Malarkey – “I would like to thank Kevin Cartledge and his team at HSBC for selecting the 2013/14 Mayoral Fund for the dinner, as this gets our annual fund raising drive off to a fantastic start”
John Wannenburgh of the Sporting & Dining Club “Presenting the best speakers to our members and their guests remains a core aim of the club, and it is thanks to HSBC that we have managed to present some of the world’s leading experts and sportsman to people on the Isle of Man”.
