In the summertime when the weather is fine …. don’t drink and drive

by isleofman.com 17th July 2013
The Department of Infrastructure’s Road Safety Team and the Roads Policing unit are running a summer anti drink drive campaign.

Summertime is when friends meet for barbeques and drinks after work taking advantage of the warmer weather and lighter evenings. We are asking drivers to think about what they drink before they drive home.  It is difficult to calculate the alcohol units you have consumed and the effect they will have on your system.

There are too many factors to consider in working out the effects of even a small amount of alcohol in your system accurately.   These include your size and weight, your metabolism; the amount of food you have eaten, the type of alcohol consumed and when and also whether you are male or female.  Therefore it is unlikely that you will be able to accurately assess if you are under the limit, and so legally able to drive a vehicle. If you are drinking at a friend’s barbeque, the measures and alcoholic content of drinks are often unclear.

David Cretney, Minister for Infrastructure said, “Some people think that drinking and driving is a problem just at Christmas, it is an all year round issue. The only safe option is not to drink if you plan to drive.  Any amount of alcohol affects your ability to drive safely as your reaction times are impaired and you are unable to judge speed and distance accurately.”

The Road Safety team will be distributing posters to key locations but if any member of the public wants a poster to display on their staff notice board they are downloadable from the Road Safety web site:

Reduce the risks, and remember: Don’t Drink and Drive. this Summer Time or anytime.
