Campaigner celebrates after controversial policy dropped

A civil liberties campaigner in the Island is calling on the social care minister to draw-up a timetable for scrapping a controversial child protection policy.


Last week a Tynwald scrutiny committee heard how the Every Child Matters agenda adopted from the UK, triggered a deluge of abuse referrals, many of them groundless.


The policy, which has since been abandoned in the Isle of Man, also resulted in an acute shortage of child social workers.


Tristram Llewelyn Jones says reassurances from the minister the agenda has been dropped should be backed with a firm plan to ensure future policy is focused on finding children at genuine risk of harm.

At the committee Mr Llewelyn Jones heard minister Chris Robertshaw admit the policy had failed in ways he predicted three years ago:
