Two youths who have been part of a pioneering project to help young people find work have secured full-time employment.
 
Josh Smith and Josh Cowie have worked on a voluntary basis on the Apemann Adventure Park that opened in May at South Barrule plantation.
 
Now both are delighted to be offered posts at the facility, which will be expanded over the next three years.
 
They gained the placement through the Future You project, which aims to give the young unemployed fresh impetus and skills to find work.
 
The project, launched by the Department of Education and Children’s Youth Service last autumn, complements existing efforts going on across Government to assist those not in education, employment or training (NEETs).
 
Experienced youth staff work on a bespoke basis with up 30 young people at a time, improving their chances of finding work – whether by helping them gain voluntary experience, training, an interest or qualifications and bolstering their CVs.
 
Josh and Josh have worked in all weathers since last autumn to create the low ropes course that’s the Apemann park’s first feature.
 
Josh Smith, who is 22, said: ‘I have been in and out of employment for the past few years. Leanne Newbold, one of the Youth Workers from Future You, contacted me and offered me the chance to work at Apemann. I have spent the last six months building the park in all weathers, including the snow that unexpectedly fell before Easter. I have enjoyed working outside – even when it was snowing. I now have a full-time job and I’m loving it.’

Josh Cowie, 18, said: ‘I was laid off and struggling to find work till I heard of Future You and contacted Leanne, who discussed with me the opportunity of working at Apemann. I have learned a lot of new skills like first aid. I am more confident and enjoy working outdoors. It’s been a good experience and now I have a job.’
 
Steve Salter, managing director of the park, said: ‘There are not many young people who get the opportunity to be involved from the beginning of a new business designing, building, constructing and planning for the future. I think more businesses should give young people the opportunity to grow and develop and prove themselves.’
 
He said: ‘Future You has offered communication and support for the lads and organised training course, funded by the Department of Economic Development, which makes them more employable.
 
‘The lads have invested time and energy in the park and I hope that their loyalty and commitment will keep them in their jobs long-term as this venture takes off.’
