Over 50 young cyclists took to the Jurby Kart Track last weekend (Saturday 20 July) to battle it out in the inaugural Youth Circuit Championships, sponsored by local legal and fiduciary services provider Appleby and the Ellan Vannin Cycling Club.
In a thrilling and competitive evening male and female riders, aged 6 to 16 raced the track in a bid to achieve podium positions. Winners included Matthew Bostock (14-16), Conor Davies (12-14), Charlie Gibson (10-12), Percy Hampton (8-10) and Mairi Harrison (6-8), whilst the fastest overall lap was clocked by Nathan Draper who completed the circuit in only 1:27. 347 minutes. The fastest female lap was undertaken by Elizabeth Holden who completed the circuit in 1:32.684.
Race organiser, Steve Shimmin, said, “With the sun shining and a brilliant atmosphere at the Jurby Track, the Youth Circuit Championships were a great success. With around 50 cyclists competing in the event, it was a fast paced evening. A huge thanks to Appleby for the support they have shown, it is events like these that help produce our future gold medallists.’
Managing Partner of Appleby Isle of Man, Sean Dowling, said “Appleby is a keen supporter of junior sports on the Island and we are pleased that we could extend this to the cycling profession.” He continued, “We have been a proud sponsor of the Ellan Vanning Cycling Club for four years now and it is great that together we could host this event for the Islands younger riders. The professionalism of the 6 to 16 year olds was outstanding and it is easy to see why our Island produces such cycling talent.”
Next up is the Appleby Sportive which takes place on Sunday 4 August. The 100km course will start and finish at the Ramsey Rugby Club and all proceeds raised will be invested to support the 2014 Youth Circuit Championships.
