Isle of Man Archery Report - 28th July

by isleofman.com 30th July 2013

The IoM Archery Club met on Sunday to shoot a York/Hereford/National round as part of the club’s Handicap League. The Handicap system allows archers of all age group, bow types and both genders to shoot against each other on an equal footing.

The day started in heavy, overcast, humid conditions with a few spots of rain. However by the time the archers were ready to shoot, the clouds had rolled away to leave a scorching sun which increased in intensity as the hours past. By the time the juniors arrived for the afternoon session the heat and humidity was almost unbearable.

Only two male compound archers showed up on Sunday; Pete Mumford and Colin Moore. Mumford claimed to have difficulty concentrating but added 39 points to his pb for his unadjusted scored. Colin, who could only stay for the morning session, also recorded a personal best for the New National Round he shot.

On the recurve front, Danny Cowin attempted a Bristol I for the first time. Without a sight mark for the 80yd distance it took him a while to settle in but he began to find a nice rhythm at both 60 and 50yds. His final unadjusted score was good enough to improve his handicap rating, while his adjusted score meant he took the win on the day.

Current Club Recurve Champion Tony Hartley brought out his Mongolian Horse Bow for the morning. As he has not recorded enough outdoor scores with this bow type, his score could not be handicapped but he easily exceeded the highest classification accorded to the round.
The George sisters elected to shoot a Fita 50 by way of practice ahead of their next competition and were joined by Sarah Rigby who took the win.

In the afternoon session the Juniors shot a variety of National rounds according to their age groups. Jack Tyrer continued to improve adding 31 to his pb.  Josh Trafford shot well but Charlotte Harris was off form. Barebow archer Rowan Spencer shot for the first time on Sunday and put in an excellent score. Once he has recorded another two scores he will receive a handicap.
