CATS is one of the most well known of Andrew Lloyd Webber's musicals. Most people will be familiar with at least one of the songs from the musical even if they don't know that it comes from CATS.
Taylorian productions has a lot to live up to with their interpretation of this magical and imaginative show. They have of course challenged themselves with previous productions, so I was keen to see what they would do this time.
The story begins with the cats being suspicious and proud and then the mood changes and we are led into their world and learn that a cat has three names not one. The one the family use daily, a more dignified name and a secret name. As our interest grows we are welcomed to the annual Jellicle Ball and our introduction to the cats begins...
It is no surprise that Munkustrap was my children's favourite cat. He is a cool silver feline and the actor Lewis Kelly played him to perfection. All the cats have their own style and personalities. Rum Tum Tugger played by Matt James has a bossy, rock cat air, while Victoria played by Gena Turpin resembles a fairy cat princess.
The staging and music engaged the senses and being lucky enough to be seated on the front row I couldn't help but notice the costumes and makeup. They were amazing, the quality and attention to detail brought authenticity to the characters.
Talent in the Island is extraordinary, we hear this all the time. However, I now believe this to be true after listening to the pitch perfect singing voices of the cast and watching how everyone, from the smallest child to the most senior actor give a performance to rival the professionals.
The show is running at the Gaiety until 17th August. Don't miss it!
