After many competitions this summer when the weather has been both warm and calm, there was a blustery wind at Greeba on Sunday, but this did not deter from some good rivalry between the competing archers. The main competition of the day was in the Gents Compound division which saw Peter Mumford, Billy Lightfoot, and Dave Moore again battling it out for glory. The round of the day was a Bristol 1 which comprises 72 arrows at 80 yards, 48 arrows at 60 yards and then 24 arrows at 50 yards. At the end of the first distance Peter was well ahead by a total of 16 points, but this did not sit well with the others, particularly Billy who pulled back 6 points by the end of the second distance. Dave had dropped off the pace so Peter only had to hold on for the final 2 dozen arrows, but Billy had other ideas and kept pulling back point by point until at the end both archers finished with the same total score of 1190. In this instance the number of golds recorded decides the winner and this resulted in Billy taking the honours with a total of 97 golds against Peter’s 95. Junior archer Adam Wright also shot this round with his recurve bow and put in a score of 848 points. Danny Cowin shot a Bristol 2 round in the recurve gents, with a total score for the day of 780.
The only lady shooting this week was Karen Lott as all the others were either away competing or on holiday. Karen shot a Hereford round which is the equivalent round to the Gents Bristol 1. Karen finished the round with a score of 815, which was slightly down on her usual level of scoring.
Some archers shot only a half day competition. These were Colin Moore (compound) and Tony Hartley (recurve) who shot a Long National, recurve archers Rob Lott and junior Josh Trafford, who shot the Short National and last but not least junior Bradley Layton who shot the National round.
This week’s competition was listed as a handicap round so the final placings and any personal best scores will be confirmed when the Records Officer returns from holiday.
Last week, following a selection shoot amongst the GB junior compound squad held at Lilleshall, both Aalin and Kirsten George secured places in the Compound Cadet Team (three archers) for the Youth World Championships to be held in Wuxi, China from 13 to 20 October 2013. As there is no compound archery in the Olympics this is the ultimate competition for any compound archer an amazing and well-deserved achievement and a wonderful opportunity for both girls.
Birthday congratulations go to Bradley Layton and Colin Moore this week, Bradley reaching 15 and Colin slightly more at his half century!
Next week the competition returns to Metric rounds - meet as usual at Greeba at 9.30 am.
