The popular Open tournament held annually at the Ballaughton Meadows club and sponsored by Chrystals Estate Agents was concluded on Sunday. The week’s excellent matches had been played in good weather. Marc Chinn, a silver medal winner (MXD) in Bermuda had a tough match against with Riaan Reikert with Marc winning 7/5,6/4 in the Men’s Group 1 Final. Laura Feely ( a triple medal winner in Bermuda) won the Women’s Group 1 final beating 14yr old Katie Harris 6/2,6/3. Katie played well against the more experienced Laura and shows great promise for the future. Men’s Group 2 final was won by Will Broadhead who beat Calvin Smith 6/0,6/0. In the Men’s Consolation Final Callum Watson beat David Winnell 6/1,6/2. Women’s Group 2 – r/r – Winner Jackie Russell, r/up Olivia Saville. Unfortunately a lack of lady players meant there was no Women’s doubles event and the Mixed Doubles was won by Marc Chinn/Laura Feely who beat the Castletown pair Jonthan Weir/Justine Torry 6/0 6/2. On Tuesday the Albany round of the British Heart Foundation tennis tournament attracted 16 ladies so I’m hoping they will all take part in the club championships. The tournament on Tuesday was a very social fun event with the winner being Gillian Pearson and joint runners-up were Phil Bannan and Jacinta Holland. The event raised just over ?200 for BHF funds and this money is used on Island. Charles Sentence thanked everyone for taking part, Ian Watson for being the referee and Albany for hosting the event.
Jay Skelcher- Maxwell (12) is having a great time playing at Wimbledon in the Road to Wimbledon Finals. Jay is representing the Isle of Man and is playing singles, plus doubles with a player from Somerset. He has had his photo taken with Tim Henman which I’m sure will have pride of place with his tennis trophies
