Manx Cancer Help launches the Marathong

by isleofman.com 16th August 2013

Manx Cancer Help, in association with Barclays Wealth and Investment Management, has launched the Marathong, a fun run highlighting male cancer awareness.

The Marathong, which is open to individuals and teams, will see men and women being sponsored to run or walk a route through Douglas. They are invited to wear colourful costumes, including eye-catching and decorated pants. Spot prizes will be awarded for the jazziest pants and best-dressed teams.

Manx Cancer Help has already received the first Marathong entry, from Patron James Toseland, who is flying to the Island especially to take part.

The fun run begins at 1.15pm outside Barclays, Victoria Street, Douglas, on Friday 20th September with registration taking place in the Barclays branch from 12.30pm.

Simon Scott, Managing Director of Barclays Wealth and Investment Management, Isle of Man, said: “The Marathong marks the end of a cancer awareness week at Barclays during which our employees will have the opportunity to attend presentations and talks about cancer and related topics. One of the speakers will be Professor Robin Davidson, Clinical Psychologist from Manx Cancer Help.”

“We will also be supporting Manx Cancer Help to generate awareness by displaying their banners and leaflets in our Victoria Street Branch. I look forward to witnessing the Marathong myself and expect a big turnout!”

Ally Martin, Manx Cancer Help Fundraising Co-ordinator, added: “The Marathong is a fun event, with a serious message, to help raise the awareness of male cancer. The prominence of male cancer is rising year-on-year and isn’t an illness that just affects older men.”

“The Marathong is set to be a fantastic and fun awareness event, which we hope to turn into a yearly occurrence. I’d like to thank Barclays Wealth and Investment Management, Douglas Development Partnership, Energy FM and G4S for their support of the event. Without them, it  would not be possible.”

Established in 1983, Manx Cancer Help provides essential emotional support and expert counselling for cancer patients, their families, carers and friends. It offers a series of free, confidential sessions, face-to-face and over the phone, to anyone affected by a cancer diagnosis.
