'The Art of Speed' at Sayle Gallery

by isleofman.com 19th August 2013

After Rachael Clegg’s successful exhibition of her ‘TT Milestones' calendar prints at the Sayle Gallery, and in the SES sponsored 'Space Mountain' exhibition at TT 2013, visitors to the Classic TT between 17th August and 1st September will have another opportunity to see Rachael’s brilliantly creative pictorial stories of the TT races.   'The Art of Speed' also includes other stunning motorcycle art in the form of the atmospheric, creative photography of Ean Proctor, the exquisitely detailed illustrations of road racing motorcycles by American Mick Ofield plus oils, watercolours and pencil works from exhibition organiser Chris Elliott as well as stunning work from automotive artist Terence Ross who will be showing sculptures and a backlit work.

As an added bonus for Road Racing fans, noted sculptor - and former Classic World Champion and British Champion - Glen English, will have his very rare and detailed 20" long 1/4 scale models of classic motorcycles and classic cars on display during ‘The Art of Speed’.  All works on show in the exhibition will be for sale.

“I am delighted to have been able to arrange ‘The Art of Speed’ at the Sayle Gallery for the Classic TT,” says artist Chris Elliott.  “I first started discussing the re-branding of the MGP as a Classic Festival with Martyn Quayle MHK early in 2011, and suggested that adopting the format of the hugely successful Goodwood Revival was one way of saving the floundering MGP.  I believe that 'The Art of Speed' will go some way towards this, adding to the ambience and all round experience of the Classic TT and  I hope that the work we are displaying in the Sayle Gallery shop will to appeal to everyone, whether resident or visitor.  In addition Glen English’s own Super Classic Manx Norton and the Classic Aermacchi on show in the Sayle Gallery window will certainly attract attention!”

'The Art of Speed' will be running alongside much loved local artist Eileen Schaer’s exhibition ‘Out of the Ordinary’, and Sayle Gallery Director Steve Smith anticipates that the juxtaposition of the two exhibitions will intrigue both art and bike lovers on the Island:

“Being an art lover doesn’t mean you don’t like the bikes – and vice versa -  and the Sayle Gallery is delighted to offer such an eclectic range of work during the Classic TT,” says Steve.  “Visitors might come in to admire Glen English’s AJS 7R model and end up buying Rachael’s calendar or even investing in one of Eileen’s surreally beautiful paintings – and I hope that our extended opening hours during the festival mean that more people can call in, see and buy some of the amazing art that’s on show in both these exhibitions.”

‘Out of the Ordinary’ runs from 16 August to 1 September in the Sayle Gallery exhibition space.

‘The Art of Speed’  runs from 17 August – 1 September  in the Sayle Gallery shop area
