The 2013 Scottish Widows Peel Golf Club junior competition has been won by Jack Gilbert.
The 13-year-old lifted the trophy after finishing with 42 points in the competition that has been sponsored by the company, part of the Lloyds Banking Group, since 1998.
Presenting the awards, in which he was assisted by colleague Michael Penton, Scottish Widows managing director Juan Clarke said sponsoring the competition was ‘a good fit’ with the company’s aim to support sporting endeavour, in particular among young people, in the Isle of Man. As examples he cited Scottish Widows having provided transportation support for a visiting junior team from Keighley Rugby Club and sponsoring kit for a team of netballers from Castle Rushen High School when they competed in a tournament in northern Spain.
He continued: ‘Across the Lloyds Banking Group we aim to build lasting links with the communities in which we operate and are always keen to get behind initiatives that encourage personal development. We’re therefore pleased to be supporting young people in a variety of sports and that our sponsorship is also helping provide opportunities for them to experience different playing environments.
‘I congratulate Jack on his success and offer a sincere “well done” to all the competitors who took part in the competition. Each year when I have the pleasure of presenting the prizes I am always impressed by the tremendous support those in the junior section receive from their families and the club’s committee members. The committee is to be applauded, not only for its work in training and raising standards of play, but also for instilling the values of golfing etiquette that helps set Peel Golf Club apart and makes its junior players such outstanding ambassadors for the game and for the Isle of Man.’
