The Island’s branch of the Royal College of Nursing is backing managers at Noble’s Hospital for supporting staff through the provision of extra resources for terminal cleans.
Speaking out on the issue, Verna Phillips, a Staff Nurse at Noble’s Hospital and Chair of the Isle of Man Branch of the RCN said: “This is a positive step forward, and I wholeheartedly welcome this initiative by managers at Noble’s Hospital. Terminal cleans are extremely important, and it is vital that this task is properly resourced. This essential work needs to be done promptly. At present, ‘terminal cleans’ are performed on an ad hoc basis, and are often required to be undertaken in the evening when there are less staff about, further compromising patient care."
Verna continued: “By taking this action, managers at Noble’s Hospital are responding to staff concerns and supporting housekeeping and portering staff by ploughing additional dedicated resources into the system. This move will also ensure that nursing staff can maintain their focus on providing care to patients. This further enhances Noble’s Hospital’s efforts to ‘release time to care’ for nursing staff and other healthcare professionals.
“There is a great deal of talk about patient safety at the moment. We feel that this initiative by managers is a positive move forward– helping to keep wards clean and patients properly cared for.”
