Police appeal after spate of marine thefts

by isleofman.com 30th August 2013
Police and Harbour authorities from across the Island are appealing for members of the public and owners of boating equipment for information that may assist in identifying those responsible for the thefts and damages of a number of marine related articles over recent months.

The most recent incident involved the theft of a boat winch from a trailer stored at Derbyhaven boat park some time between 20th and 26th August.  The silver metal winch and handle was unbolted from the trailer frame but is unfortunately not particularly identifiable.  The winch is worthless as scrap and only fit for the purpose for which it is intended.  Has someone you know recently acquired such an item and been ‘cagey’ about its origins?  Has someone offered you one for sale?

PC Robin Arnold of Port Erin Police Station is investigating.  PC Arnold is keen to speak to anyone who may have any information relating to this, or any other similar theft or incident of damage over the summer.

Prevention is better than cure in this instance and these thefts can often be attributed to complacency amongst marine equipment owners.  Simply marking your items with a distinctive coloured paint, keeping them out of sight or locking them to a static object can act as a significant deterrent to would be thieves.

Thankfully these type of incidents are rare but following the simple steps above may prevent further instances in the future.

PC Arnold can be contacted at Port Erin Police Station on 832222 or by email on robin.arnold@gov.im.  Alternatively, information can be passed to Crimestoppers anonymously by telephoning 0800 555 111.
