IOM based A’level students exceeded UK averages in exam result recently and a further sign of the quality of Manx education is the record numbers of students who made the IOM College of Further & Higher Education their first choice to study their degree programme. “We are expecting over 60 students to commence their higher education programmes in Sept/Oct at our Homefield Rd and Nunnery campuses” said Gail Corrin, the newly appointed Manager, Higher Education at the College.
The introduction earlier this year of tuition fees from Sept 2014 onwards may have had an impact on the increasing number of students heading to the College but academic results are also a major factor. “Last year we exceeded the UK average for the number of first class honours degrees in our Business Studies and Computer Science programmes. As an Associate College of the University of Chester our students have the benefit of the University’s excellent online learning resources combined with expert tutors and smaller classes here on island”.
There are many factors to consider when choosing whether on study on or off island and in the future the College is hoping to offer degree programmes whereby students can take their first year at the College and then complete their degree at Chester. “ We are looking to grow are HE offering and so expand the choices and opportunities available Manx residents wishing to study”.
Although it has been a record year for enrolments there are still a few places available in some of the degree programmes starting in 4 weeks . A new programme for this year is the BA (Hons) Combined Business Studies and Computer Science. Professionals within a business environment need to be multi skilled in order to keep up with the technological demands of international business. So expertise in both business practices and the technology that businesses depends on is needed. This degree develops a knowledge and skills required by computing professionals and managers alike.
