MER plans spark outrage

by isleofman.com 3rd September 2013

The Manx Electric Railway Society is calling for plans to revamp Laxey station to be scrapped.

The enthusiasts organisation says modern street furniture and paving will be the “ruination” of the station’s charm, ambience and character.

Describing Laxey as the jewel in the MER crown, the society says the new features will be inappropriate at a location that’s been largely unchanged in 80 years.

In a statement, the society points to stainless steel street furniture, modern LED lighting and paving materials as being particular problems.

Those behind the planning application say the changes will produce a modern, regenerated village centre.
But the MER Society describes the proposals as wholly unnecessary and ill-conceived as well as potentially dangerous.
On top of that, it’s warning enthusiasts who want an authentic experience may shun the Isle of Man in future.
It’s now calling for Community, Culture and Leisure Minister Graham Cregeen to halt the scheme while a public discussion is carried out.
