How energy efficient is your home? Are renewables a feasible option?

by isleofman.com 3rd September 2013
Two new versions of online tools from the Energy Saving Trust are now available for residents on the Isle of Man to use and can be accessed via the Bright Ideas homepage at: www.gov.im/brightideas

The ‘Home Energy Check’ helps you assess the energy performance of your home and suggests a range of improvements to suit different budgets which either help reduce energy bills or cut carbon emissions. Estimates are given for the cost and expected lifetime of improvements, including the installation of renewables, so you can calculate the potential payback. With many properties on the Island still poorly insulated this tool can help households reduce the cost of keeping their homes warm which is of particular importance to vulnerable groups. By reducing energy bills households will also have more money to spend locally which benefits our economy.

The ‘Renewables Selector’ provides greater information about which renewable energy devices may be suitable for your home in your circumstances.

The Manx versions of these tools take into account Isle of Man specific circumstances such as energy prices, climatic conditions and when changes to building regulations came into effect.

Minister Gawne said:

“Following on from the success of the Energy Doctor Service I am pleased that an alternative means of providing households on the Island with impartial advice about home energy efficiency measures and the feasibility of renewable energy technologies is now available. These tools should help households plan improvements to their homes which save them money and reduce their impact on the environment. They also provide advice to those who may feel they didn’t have access to the Energy Doctor Service due to work commitments.”

Both web based tools were commissioned using the Government’s Energy Initiatives Capital Fund.
