Albany’s Club Championships, sponsored by Auxesia Ltd, was concluded on Saturday with the men’s and women’s defending champions, Marc Chinn and Laura Feely both retaining their titles. Having defeated Elena Snidal 6/2 6/1 in the women’s singles semi-final, in the final Laura defeated Sarah Breed 6/2,6/3 and partnered by Sarah won the women’s doubles 6/0 6/2 against Kirsten Olsen and Elena Snidal. Laura also partnered Men’s Champion, Marc Chinn in the mixed doubles with a 6/1 6/1 win over Calvin Smith and Elena Snidal. The finals were watched by HE Lt Governor, Adam Wood, who had expressed a wish to see some of the Island Games tennis team in action. In the men’s singles versus Sean Drewry Marc won 6/2 6/2. In the men’s doubles, partnered by Oliver Broadhead he collected his third title winning 6/0 6/0 against the younger pairing of Sean Drewry /Adam Pyatt-Coppell.

In the knock-out stage semi-finals l Jayden Go bt Aaron Hempsall 10-2 and Harry McAleer bt Mika Chen 10-5. and in the final Jayden bt Harry 6/10 10/1 10/3. In the Girls singles U8 r/r winner Mika Chen 3 wins and r/up Charlotte Clarke 2 wins. Mixed singles U9 (orange)r/r Gr.A winner Zac Walker r/up Roch Mirskil; Gr. B winner Roch Mirski r/up Jayden Go. Semi-finals Roch bt Sam 4-0, Zac bt Jayden 4-1. The final was a close match with Zac eventually winning 1-4, 4-1 (10-7). Mixed singles U10(green) r/r winner Zac 4 wins, r/up Roch 3 wins. Mixed singles U12 winner Max Walker 4 wins, r/up Jay Skelcher-Maxwell 3 wins. Due to the lack of girls entered for U18 singles, this was played as mixed: qtr.finals Max Walker bt Sarah Breed 4/6 6/2(10-7), Katie Harris bt Sasha Thomas 6/2,6/0; semi finals Adam Pyatt-Coppell bt  Max 6/3 6/1, Will Broadhead bt Katie 6/2 6/0 and in the final Will beat Adam 6/0 6/0. Boys Doubles U18final Sean Drewry/Adam Pyatt-Coppell beat Max Walker/Jay Skelcher-Maxwell 6/0 6/0. Men’s Doubles semi-finals Oliver Broadhead/Marc Chinn beat Calvin Smith/David Winnell 6/2, 6/0, Sean Drewry/Adam Pyatt-Coppell beat Will Alexander/Anthony Gullan 6/2 6/2. Women’s doubles – qualifying group semi-finals Nuala Duffy/Atchara Holmes w/o Emma Raybon/Jackie Russell, Gillian Pearson/Bridget Stewart bt Jacinta Hollan/Pauling Montague 6/4 5/7 (13-11) Final Nuala/Atchara bt Jacinta/Pauline 6/1 7/6 and qualified for the main draw.Mixed doubles saw a good entry. Qtr finals Jacinta Holland/Stuart Colligon bt Ian Copley Kirsten Olsen 6/4 6/1; Sarah Breed/Max Walker bt Anthony Morgan/Gillian Pearson 6/1 6/4; semi-finals Marc Chinn/Laura Feely bt Jacinta/Stuart 6/0 6/0 and Calvin Smith/Elena Snidal bt Sarah/Max 6/2 6/0. After a short break due to rain the matches were completed and His Excellency presented the prizes then everyone enjoyed afternoon tea prepared by some of our lady members.

Coaching sessions are starting and all juniors should have received details of the group(s) they are selected for. Sundays, starting 15 September - is 2-3pm Green club the Yellow balls groups at 3pm and 4pm. Orange ball club Wednesdays 4.30- 5.30pm,Yellow Ball club night 5.30pm –7pm; Thursdays 5pm-6pm Orange Invitation, 6pm-7pm Green invitation; Fridays 4pm-5pm Orange Girls Invitation (but no session on 13th). Starting later are Mondays from 16 September 5pm-7pm Tour squad Invitation and Tuesdays Mini Tennis Club Night – 4pm-5pm Red ball (A), 5pm-6pm Red ball (B), 4.30pm-6pm Orange & Green ball. There will also be Adult coaching on Tuesday 6pm – 7pm, starting on 17 September for 6 weeks – (?30 for 6 x 1hr lessons) .This is aimed at players who haven’t played before or those who played a few years ago and are rusty. Don’t forget to enter the Senior/Junior American tournament to be held on President’s Day, Sunday 15 September. This is open to all members and there will be a draw for partners with each senior playing with a junior. Older juniors who have played regular league tennis will play as seniors, who only have a first serve. This avoids the young ones being knocked off court! Entry forms are in the clubhouse – you can fill one in and put it in the “postbox” in the clubroom or enter by e-mail ballabreck@manx.net. Entry fee is ?3 seniors ?2 juniors with all proceeds going to the club’s fund for resurfacing the courts next year.
