President’s Day, despite the rain and gales went ahead using the indoor court, round-robin and knock-out formats and playing Champion’s tie-break. This annual tournament brings senior and juniors together with each senior having a junior partner but seniors only having one serve. This is to cut out, maybe, their ace 1st serves. The winners for group A was Jan Gaskill/Max Walker (29),r/up Calvin Smith (playing as a senior)/Sam Skelcher-Maxwell (25). Group B winners were Sean Drewry (playing as a senior)/Angelo Go (30) with David Winnell/Zac Walker r/up (26).
Everyone then played the knock-out stage being placed in the draw according to their r/robin results. In the qtr.finals ; Val Worth/Jay Skelcher-Maxwell beat Jan & Max 10-5,David/Zac beat Bryan Sharp/Odhran Dykes 10-5, Sean/Angelo beat Stuart Colligon/James O’Dell (10-4), Karen Smith/Oliver Wait beat Calvin/Sam 10-8.
The semi-finals saw some keen competition especially from the juniors with Val/Jay beating David/Zac 10-8 and Sean/Angelo winning 10-9 against Karen/Oliver. The final was a tense affair with Val and Jay standing up well to the fierce “one serve” from Sean and Angelo playing as a reliable partner. The score? 10-9. Val Worth, who won the event last year with a different partner came within the one point of having her name on the Sharp Trophy again. The trophy and medals were presented by club President, Bryan Sharp and Clare Skelcher thanked Bryan for organising the event and then everyone enjoyed the usual Albany tea.
