His Excellency to open new youth facility

by isleofman.com 23rd September 2013

His Excellency the Lieutenant Governor will formally open a new facility for young music-makers next Tuesday (October 1st).

Adam Wood will launch the recording studio that has been created for the Soundcheck project within the Youth Arts Centre in Kensington Road, Douglas.

‘His Excellency has taken a keen interest in projects run by the Department of Education and Children’s Youth Service during his time at Government House and it’s superb that he is giving up his time to formally open our new facility, which will be used by up and coming bands and soloists,’ said Ken Callister, Principal Youth Officer.

Soundcheck is approaching its 20th year and operates in Douglas, Peel, Ramsey and Castletown, offering young people aged 11 to 19 rehearsal space, instrument use, PA equipment, advice and support. Sessions are often over-subscribed, although the project is keen to hear from young people wishing to get involved.

Soundcheck performs at events Island-wide as well as hosting its own gigs at the Villa Marina and it is planning numerous events for Island of Culture 2014.

The studio will be available for Soundcheck acts to record their music and release CDs in their own right using the Soundcheck record label. The project plans a compilation CD featuring some of the young musicians who are involved at present.

‘This is the first time Soundcheck has had its own recording base, something that has been made possible thanks to generous support from the Isle of Man Arts Council and Britannia International,’ Ken said.
