RMT union concerned by ferry operator plans

by isleofman.com 24th September 2013

Transport union the RMT has voiced serious concerns about pay and conditions on offer to crew employed by a new ferry operator on the Isle of Man.

The union's released a statement claiming competition based on lower-paid foreign crews could undermine services, jobs and working conditions on the Steam Packet operation.

New operator Ellan Vannin Line plans to launch a freight service to rival the Packet next April, but has yet to secure berths at Heysham and Douglas.

The RMT is calling on the UK and Manx governments to bring in controls to prevent what it calls unfair competition.
