On Tuesday 6th August 2013, in front of Panel Deemster Turner QC, Andrew James Maddrell pleaded guilty to an offence of possessing 232 indecent images of children. On Friday 9th August 2013, at a court of General Gaol Delivery in front of Deemster Montgomerie, 24 year old Andrew James Maddrell of Douglas, formerly a nursery worker at Sandcastles Kindergarten, pleaded guilty to an offence of indecent assault against a child of 3 years.
On 23rd September 2013, at a court of General Gaol Delivery, Mr Maddrell was sentenced to the following:
Indecent assault on a child: 4 years and 8 months
Making Indecent Images of children: 7 months
This is a total of 5 years and 3 months that Mr Maddrell must serve consecutively. A Sexual Offences Prevention Order was also made and he was placed on the Sex Offenders register for 20 years.
Detective Constable Nick Haxby said “This investigation has been extremely difficult and distressing for everyone involved due to the very sensitive nature of the allegations against Mr Maddrell. We are pleased that this investigation has now come to a successful conclusion for the victims and families affected by the criminal actions of Mr Maddrell, and we are hoping that this final process will be some form of closure for the children and their families.
Mr Maddrell has been sentenced for sexually assaulting a three year old child, who at the time was in his care at the nursery and also for possessing indecent images of children. I want to reiterate the images are not linked in anyway to the children at the nursery.
Mr Maddrell was in a position of ultimate trust to care and nurture these children. During this time Mr Maddrell was given the responsibility to be the childs friend, teacher and parent. For reasons only known to Mr Maddrell he chose to breach this trust and sexually assault a child for his own selfish sexual gratification.
I would like to thank the families directly involved in this investigation for their courage to report the matter to the Police, but also their continued support and understanding over the last 12 months. This time has been extremely difficult and frustrating for them. I would also like to thank all the families not directly involved in this investigation and the other agencies that have assisted us.
Thanks to Victim Support Services for the assistance and support offered to the families throughout this investigation.
O would also like to thank my colleagues within the Public Protection Unit, Scientific Support Unit and the Attorney General’s Chambers. This has been an extremely difficult investigation due to the very young ages of the children involved and the nature of the allegations against Mr Maddrell. Our aim is to protect and safeguard children, and we will continue to work closely with our partners and other agencies to ensure this is done.”
