Eight lower-sixth students from King William’s College are travelling to Cambridge this month to discover more about the collegiate university and what life would be like if they successfully apply to study there.
All eight students achieved outstanding results in their GCSEs and iGCSEs this year, with one pupil, Adam Kite, achieving 11 A*s, and certainly have the ability to apply to the most selective universities. They are being taken to an annual Alumni festival at the university by Caitlin Howell-Evans, teacher of biology and chemistry, and John Wright, the College’s Director of Music.
Whilst there, the students will have the opportunity to sample a wide variety of university and college life. They will be attending a range of seminars and presentations delivered by leaders in their field, and students have chosen personal itineraries with selections as diverse as ‘The Romance of Pride and Prejudice’ and an introduction to current research on the Higgs boson particle. They will also have time to go punting, visit local museums and attractions and generally become familiar with the city and what it has to offer.
The Principal, Martin Humphreys, who is also a Cambridge Alumnus, enthused: “University is a big step for our young people, both academically and personally, and so we believe it is essential that we do everything we can to help them pick a university and city which suits. This is particularly true of the collegiate universities, which are different in structure and lifestyle to others.
“We celebrate all forms of success at King William’s College and expect to help over 95% of our students get into their first choice university this year. However, I admit I do take particular pleasure in knowing that we consistently help academically gifted students to find well-deserved placements at the world’s most prestigious and selective universities.”
This autumn, two College students are taking up places at Cambridge, both in Natural Sciences. Zlatina Dobreva is going to Queens’ College, and Daria Holdenried-Chernoff will be studying at Sidney Sussex.
