The recent revival in interest in Manx Gaelic has resulted in some fantastic achievements in the last ten years or so: The Bunscoill Ghaelgagh teaches the primary school curriculum through the medium of Manx, over a 1000 children learn some Manx in schools and there is a growing number of determined and enthusiastic learners supported by a network of classes and a programme run under the auspices of the Manx Heritage Foundation.
This revival gained further momentum on Saturday with the launch of Pobble (people, community, folk in Manx) at Cains, Fort Anne Headquarters on Douglas Head. Pobble aims to progress the work achieved over the last twenty years and in the first instance it will work to ensure that the language has a very visible presence during Island of Culture Year in 2104.
Pobble will work towards ensuring that the language is seen as a community asset open to all regardless of background and which has real economic, cultural and social benefits to the Island.
Adrian Cain, the Manx Language Development Officer for the Manx Heritage Foundation, commented that the launch of Pobble reflected 'the growth in the number of adult learners and the development of a real sense of confidence and purpose in the language community.'
Chris Stott, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Mansat LLC and one of the growing number of businesses keen to support the language commented that, 'Pobble's work is so much more than the simple preservation of a language. it is bringing Manx to the forefront of global culture and modern life. We are only just beginning to discover the benefits of reviving our language.'
Annemarie Hughes Director at Dougherty Quinn Advocates and Secretary to Pobble, stated, "I am delighted to be involved with this new charity in its aim to actively promote the Manx language which is a unique and positive part of the Isle of Man. The objectives of Pobble in supporting the Manx language as an integral part of our culture and heritage, reflects our desire as a business to support the Manx community and ultimately the Island as a whole internationally.''
