by isleofman.com 14th October 2013

King William’s College has opened invitations for its annual Sixth Form Scholarship examinations. Open to all school pupils due to enter lower sixth, or Year 12, in September 2014, the series of Academic Scholarships as well as Music, Drama and Sports Awards offer candidates a potential 20 per cent saving on annual tuition fees over the course of two academic years.

This year’s examinations are to be held on Saturday 9th November, with the deadline for applications on Friday 1st November. Examinations consist of papers in English and Mathematics, as well as one other subject chosen by the candidate. This would normally be a subject the candidate expects to study at Higher Level as part of the International Baccalaureate Diploma. Candidates who choose to be examined in Music, Theatre or Visual Arts may be required to undergo a practical assessment, while candidates for the sports award will be invited to a practical assessment where they will be expected to demonstrate a high level of proficiency in at least two of the major sports played at the College. Candidates are also required to attend an interview and should normally be under 17 years of age on the 1st September of the year of entry.

Founded in 1968, the International Baccalaureate, or IB, programme is a recognised leader in international education and offers four educational programmes for children aged 3 to 19. Now adopted in over 3,500 schools in 146 countries, the programme encourages millions of students to become self-confident and internationally minded learners. The IB is specifically designed to provide a flexible learning framework that can be tailored by the school to meet the needs of students and provides an academic and practical foundation to support both their higher learning and professional training.

Joss Buchanan, Vice-Principal-Academic, at King William’s College, stated “Possibly the greatest benefit of the IB is that it allows an element of flexibility in terms of both available subjects and the manner in which they are taught. Given growing internationalism within the commercial sector and the fact that more and more students are looking globally for higher education, present day graduates will be competing on a global scale in both the professional environment and tertiary education fields. Participation in the IB is open to all, and equips students with experiences, skills and qualifications which are portable and will open doors to the truly global commercial environment which awaits them. Our Sixth Form Scholarships and awards are an excellent opportunity, and we invite all students to become part of this important programme.”
