Speaker at MIND conference urges openness in mental health problems

The problems faced by those suffering mental illness in a tight-knit community like the Isle of Man have been at the centre of lively debate.
Ridding mental illnesses of stigma and discrimination was the theme of the Service Users Network conference, at Keyll Darree at Noble's Hospital.
Speakers representing charities and pressure groups as well as health service professionals described similar experiences suffered by clients.
They include a reluctance to admit having a mental health problem and discrimination because of it, from the world at large.
The keynote address was given by Brigid Morris from the UK charity MIND, who urged anyone with a mental health problem to be open about it with others.
But she admitted than can be difficult in a small community:
