It was with great pleasure and excitement that Hospice Isle of Man’s Northern Committee launched their cookbook recently.
The launch event took place at Equiom’s beautiful offices in Douglas in the presence of His Excellency Adam Wood and other local personalities.
The gem of a fundraising idea began in the depths of winter in early January 2013. It was with a lot of hard work that the small committee started to write to well known local people requesting they contribute their favourite recipes and a reason as to why they liked to eat them or indeed cook them.
The recipes soon started to flow in with every category of starters, mains course, sweets and ‘other’ sweet things being covered. The end product contains over 75 recipes.
Through a connection with Equiom, the leading international trust and corporate services provider headquartered in the Isle of Man and with offices in Jersey and Malta, they managed to secure a large sponsorship deal for the printing. In fact Equiom went a step further with a team of 8 staff including Larry Kearns Chairman and Group Managing Director Sheila Dean climbing the 3 peaks in June of 2013.
The magnificent endeavour eventually raised over ?10,000 for Hospice to include a generous printing allowance for the committee.
The team also consisted of Andrew Wilson, Fiona Noon, Emma Corlett, Robert Cattle and Michael McHale. James Horrigan of Cube Treasury also joined in the feat of climbing Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon. The total distance the team walked was 42km with a total ascent of 9,800 feet. This was all achieved with 24 hours.
Lizzie Green of Hospice’s Northern Committee thanked Equiom, her fellow committee members, the recipe donors and the committee’s stalwart husbands for all their hard work and efforts to get this project to fruition. The Northern Committee also thanked Mannin Media for all their support with the printing of these books.
The launch was attended by over 80 people. During the evening a raffle was held and over 81 cookbooks were sold. Over ?1,000 was raised on the night for the charity.
The cookbooks are available from lots of locations around the Island including Hospice’s itself and all their shops. There are lots of locations in Ramsey also stocking them including The Gym, Sun ‘n’ Beauty, Inspirations and The Snug. St Paul's Bookshop in Ramsey has lone managed to sell over 60 copies so far. In Douglas the book is also available from the Manx Museum, The Book Shop, in Castle Street, Douglas, Riley’s Garden Centre, The Lexicon book shop and the Welcome Centre. They are also available in The Gas Light Company in Castletown.
It is also worth mentioning that the cookbook contains a recipe from an inspirational young lady called Jade Quirk who loved to bake cupcakes. Joan Cranshaw of the Northern Committee was also the artist for the book. Joan was so touched by Jade’s story that she drew the cup cakes for the front and back cover.
In addition the books can be ordered by contacting the Fundraising team at Hospice on 647432. The books cost ?6.99 each. There will an additional charge if needed to be posted.
Equiom’s Group Managing Director, Sheila Dean added: “Having worked with Hospice we realise that the challenges the patients, their families and Hospice staff face on a daily basis are unimaginable compared to the challenges that the Equiom team faced climbing the 3 Peaks. Their dedication, commitment and perseverance are what inspired us all to keep going.”
“I am delighted that we are able to support Hospice. All the Equiom staff wish them and the Hospice Isle of Man Northern Committee all the success in the launch of their ‘Just a Taste’ cookbook, which consists of fantastic recipes from Island based residents.”
