Over 100 films have been screened by Films in Peel at the Centenary Centre since the ‘cinema in the west’ was set up by Eric Glithero in November 2008. Run by a group of volunteers who have a love of film but also feel strongly about offering an alternative cinema experience in the West of the Island, Films in Peel has developed a supportive audience in Peel but also from all over the Island.
Over the past five years Films in Peel has built up a large collection of DVDs. With the support of the directors at the Centenary Centre, this collection was offered to the Ward Library in Peel so the DVDs could be borrowed by library members.
Librarian Carol Horton was very happy to receive this donation. She told us:
“It is very generous of the Centenary Centre and Films in Peel to give us such a great collection of DVDs for our members to borrow. There is something for everyone, from childrens’ films to old classics and from documentaries to modern day comedies. I can’t wait to get them out on the shelves.”
The collection was handed over to the Chairman of Peel Commissioners Ray Harmer, by Centenary Centre director, Jimmy Kneen, in the company of Carol Horton and the Films in Peel committee members (Eric Glithero, Myra Gilbert and Jenny and Jerry Oliver). Ray Harmer thanked Films in Peel on behalf of the Commissioners and the library members.
The Ward Library was opened in 1907 by Thomas Kneen, Clerk of the Rolls, and is named after its benefactor, James Kewley Ward, who was born in 1819 on the site where the library now stands. The Library has over 15,000 books on its shelves along with a large collection of audio tapes, large print books for the visually impaired, computer stations and wi-fi. Now it also has a collection of 60 DVDs. For anyone interested in becoming a member of the library they can register in person during library open hours for a small fee.
