Work will get underway shortly to improve the Manx Electric Railway Station at Laxey.
Tynwald has approved funding for a scheme to renew the track through the station area, including rail, sleepers and ballast.
This scheme is being taken forward by the Department of Community, Culture and Leisure and is aimed at ensuring the station infrastructure remains fit for purpose, while also making the area more appealing and safer for pedestrians.
Meanwhile, regeneration plans to transform the Rose Garden into a central heart for the village are moving closer.
The project aims to enhance the area by creating a space that links to the MER station. It is hoped the work will go forward as soon as some land negotiations are finalised.
In addition, plans have been approved to rejuvenate the coach park from a tired and run down area into a place where coach travellers will be welcomed by high quality paving, information and seating.
The project has been revised and a second planning application submitted for the coach stops on Mines Road which now features five stops rather than the previous three.
Steve Rodan SHK, Chairman of Laxey Regeneration Committee, said: ‘Works to the MER Station signify an important part of the planned enhancements to Laxey village centre. Whilst not a regeneration-funded scheme, the improvement to the station will complement the planned enhancements to the Rose Gardens and the creation of a village square. These works, coupled with the improvements to the coach park area, will give the many visitors to Laxey a much better first impression when arriving in the village.’
